Our Passion Project
FSL Disrupt is a passion project initiated by French as a second language (FSL) teachers in Ontario, Canada.
Our quest initially began in fall 2020 as a search of novels with racialized and Indigenous main characters (initially began as the Collective Catalogue of FSL Books for Diversity). Initially, this was a group of FSL teachers looking to update our bookshelves and book rooms with novels by and about Black people, Indigenous people, and other racialized people. We have since shifted our work to focus on:
facilitating professional development for FSL teachers to understand anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and anti-colonial pedagogy, both holistically and in the FSL context
promote knowledge mobilization, supporting teacher professional learning networks and supporting teachers in the development of course, unit, and lesson planning tools to centre racialized and marginalized voices, inquiry-based pedagogy, and culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy
providing consultation support for educators, school boards and educational leadership teams and offering tools and criteria to select texts for classroom use
The quest for culturally responsive and relevant texts is near and dear to our hearts, and this will continue to be a key component of the project. We are very thankful to those who have helped grow the collection of novels we have featured on this website, and hope that this collection continues to grow!
