Notes from a teacher-reader
This is a very long read
Almost all the main characters (5-6) are female and multiple secondary characters are also female
Mother is white and has a child from her first marriage, marries a Black man who also has a child from his first marriage. The couple has 2 more children and the story revolves around the lives of the 4 teenage sisters.
Content warnings: Father is in the military and loses a limb, one daughter comes out to the family, another daughter is diagnosed with Leukemia, one child is abandoned by her father, one child's mother died
The plot at times felt cringy, some parts are cliché
I would not recommend this as a core class novel
The themes are very much centered on female teenagers and feels very "young"
